African Map projects

We connected art to geography by creating themed African maps in groups of 3. Each group were given a different them: Art, Fashion, Music, Topography and Land-forms. I asked them to work together to creatively come up with a way to represent their them in the form of a map of Africa.

6th Grade Mandalas

6th graders have been learning about India in Social Studies, so we learned about different types of Indian Art, and they created their own mandalas with colored pencils. 

First, I gave them a practice paper with circles and liens to guide them so they would have a basic understanding of how to create different decorative elements, and expand their mandalas in a circular form:

Then, they created the same lines with rules, separating their papers into 8 sections. They created Indian-style patterns, and expanded their pattern in a circular form, just like their practice sheet. They added color with colored pencils:

Wayne Thiebaud's "Triple Layer Cake"

5th graders have been expanding their knowledge of perspective and depth with this delicious Wayne Thiebaud project. We learned a lot about the amazing pop-artist, and noticed how he always had a strong use of shadows and perspective in simple objects like desserts and candy.

5th graders drew their own triple-layer Thiebaud style cake using the diagram below (it's color coded by step):

They chose what color construction paper they wanted for the background, and colored it with oil pastels to give it the extra "pop."
