3 part typography project

Graphic Design students created a 3-part typography project. First, they created a basic alphabet following the guidelines of creating a font like width, height, thickness and weight. Then they created a hand-drawn "fancy" font, adding an element of decoration to their first basic alphabet. Lastly, they chose a quote and applied their fancy font to it with an illustration.

Graphic design Raise Awareness Campaigns

WHY  PAINT HER SKIN WHEN YOU CAN PAINT THE WALLS
Claudia wanted to raise awareness about domestic abuse. She used pantone swatches to show different colors of bruises and gave them unexpected names, like the name of a woman or the basis of an argument.

IT'S HUMAN
Priscilla wanted to raise awareness about the norms of beauty. She photographed her friends' different hair textures to show there's no perfect hair and she photographed her friend and added leg hair, to show you can still be beautiful with some hair on your legs, or in your eyebrows.

ARE YOU GRATEFUL YET?
Gabriela wanted to shed light on the obvious difference in economic status that you see in every car ride in Santo Domingo. She took each picture for her campaign from inside of a car, and brought attention to homeless people living on the street, the lack of education, and the needs of all families.

NO EXCUSE FOR ANIMAL ABUSE
Daniela wanted to raise awareness about animal abuse. She photographed her own cat and dog, and wrote a quote about animal abuse over-top. She also created a logo to go on each poster.

STOP WAR
Gabriela created a campaign about putting an end to war. She hand-drew each poster, explaining different elements about what we lose during times of war.

Photography Alphabet

In Graphic Design class, we are beginning to learn about typography and letters, so as an introduction to the unit students were assigned 3-4 different letters each that they had to photograph in a natural organic environment. We put the letters together to make a full alphabet, and here are the results:

Graphic Design varied simple compositions

Graphic Design students delved deeper into their basic black and white compositions using black ink instead of cutting and pasting. They created 12 squares on their paper, and used lines for the top row, shapes for the 2nd row, a repeating pattern/ grid for the 3rd row, and organic shapes for the 4th row. They spent a very long time on these compositions and they turned out beautifully.

Graphic Design: Cut & Paste basic compositions

This year, I am teaching Graphic Design at MC School for the first time to High-School students. I am very excited because I am a graphic designer, and don't get enough time to incorporate it into my student projects. Before we began designing, students researched graphic designers and presented their history and examples of their work. We have begun creating basic compositions using black and white shapes in a square format, focusing on shape, form, negative space and placement. I gave students paper with six empty squares, and another paper with various geometric shapes to cut out and glue, taking into account what we learned in class. They did a great job and are ready for our next leap into design composition.
